Neoticker charting, NinjaTrader orders

Are there any Neoticker users in the house?

Today NT crashed on me so many times I about had a breakdown. I am very experienced with NT crashes, usually I can solve them in seconds. Not today. Crash after crash after crash after crash, all during cash session, which cost me in lost opportunities.

I was browsing the Neoticker website, and found that Mirus/Zen-Fire/Dorman is not on their broker list, but that you can use NinjaTrader as an order gateway.

TickQuest Inc. NeoTicker(R) - Configuring Order Placement to NinjaTrader

The basic idea is you load NT and have it sit in the background somewhere, and use Neoticker to manage everything and it passes the orders to NT through their plug-in. This opens up more broker support for Neoticker. I think it's just a short term fix, anyone who is seriously using Neoticker on a daily basis will opt to not go this route (my guess).

But I was wondering if anyone is actually going this route, or has in the past, and if anyone has any direct comparisons between Neoticker and NinjaTrader? I'm ready to switch to something. Looking at MultiCharts 7 vs. Neoticker now.

Mike

1) Stop changing things. No new indicators. No new charts. No new methods. Be consistent with what is in front of you first.
2) Start a journal and post to it every day with the trades you made. It will show your strengths and weaknesses.
3) Set goals for yourself that you can reach every day. Make them about how you trade, and not about how much money you make.
4) Accept responsibility for your actions. Stop looking elsewhere to explain away poor performance. You must look within.

I have neoticker using esignal data. A previous mentor of mine taught me how to use it. Neoticker is rock solid in terms of stability, but has a huge learning curve, as they do things differently than other platforms (i.e. workspaces and charts are not straight forward to create). That said, once you know what you are doing it works great.

I have not programmed anything in neo, so I can not offer any insight vs c# in Ninja, as I have stuck with Ninja for custom programing.

One downside is the program requires the use of a USB dongle (unless you get a crack). The dongle does work fine in virtual machines though.

There is a pretty good forum where all of my questions have always been answered. I know they considered adding Zen as a datafeed, but it has not been done yet.

I like the platform, but I recommend doing your homework before buying a copy.

P.S. I have a couple of full copies. PM me if interested.

aslan,

I downloaded the demo tonight and got it up and running in 30 minutes including overlaying a few symbols and time frames on one chart, etc. I had some problems getting the colors I wanted (I could configure down candles but not up candles, or vice versa), but otherwise I managed.

I don't need Zen, I have IQfeed now as well which is what I used tonight and it worked fine. That is for data though. I would like Zen from a broker stand point, which of course they don't have as you mentioned. Three solutions a) use their NT plug-in, submit orders via Neo and have it manage them in NT. b) use NT DOM along side Neo chart. c) switch to a supported broker like MBT or OEC.

I found the charting to be extremely fast. The memory footprint was 30mb, whereas NT easily ten times that. But NT7 does improve in this area. Still I don't care, if it used 8GB of memory that is fine with me if it is 100% solid and never crashes. Of course we both know NT7 is far from that.

I'll keep playing around with it, but my first impressions where the interface is really clumsy. But so is NT if you are not used to it, so it is too early to judge. But one thing that I did find disappointing was -- where is the DOM? I mean, is there one? I couldn't find it. I can use MultiCharts if I just want charting. I really want a complete package, with more sophisticated options on the DOM than what NT provides, and was hoping Neo would deliver. Maybe I just haven't looked deep enough yet.

MultiCharts 7 is supposed to finally have some sort of DOM and discretionary order entry support, but the question is -- will it be a v1.0 DOM or a v7.0 DOM? For now, I am once again looking at MC 6.

I just want my damn charts the way I want them without everything crashing ten times. I know NT won't crash if I don't load any charts or indicators, and just use the DOM. So it's a possible solution.

I spent the last couple hours with Neo and am warming up to it. Some of the functionality is really amazing, a lot of things you should be able to do with a single actually work (unlike NT).

I'd have to port some of my stuff over (what you see here is using built-in stuff), but I am really impressed with the speed so far. I had no problem overlaying multiple dataseries of different time frames or instruments, or just overlaying an indicator on top of price. It all worked perfectly, incredibly quickly, and without crashing nine times or making me re-configure all the settings like NT7 does.

I'll play with it more during a cash session and might keep an eye on it. One thing, I couldn't get CL to load for some reason. Only QM. Hmm.

I need to figure out the order entry and why I'm not seeing it.

Going to re-visit MC6 beta as well.

I don't use Neoticker (yet).

However, if you are using NT7.beta9 there appears to be some serious issues with the changes they recently made.

I'm sure they will not admit it but seems as if everyone is having issues with corrupt data, corrupt workspaces, corrupt charts... (you get the idea).

I have completely removed and reinstalled beta 9 three times and rebuilt the workspaces, charts, templates each time. This will solve the problem but only for a short time (two days is the longest so far).

If it happens again I'm going to downgrade to beta 8 until the next upgrade.

Everyone here brings JOY...

Some by coming...
Others by going...

I don't believe there is a DOM in Neo, unless a broker addon provides it. It is a good charting platform, to be used along side a good execution platform.

neotick was rock solid and multi time frame handling was a breeze you could drag and drop any where you want. The reason I left was not many people use it so indicators were limited to what they have and I just wanted a bigger set of indicators. PS. costly data from esignal didn't help either.

I've been looking at Neoticker also. The main reason I haven't moved ahead with it is lack of developers , community, and indicators. Might be great for someone who can program all their own indicators or who doesnt need many.

Neoticker has some attractive features:
  • Their "Tick level order processing engine" for backtesting
  • They use the same engine for backtesting and live
  • Supposedly backtesting and optimization is extremely fast
  • stability
  • they don't mangle the bid/ask data like ninja does (I think)
while some of the downsides are:
  • lack of community
  • lack of indicators
  • much smaller pool of developers to choose from (important for nonprogrammers)
  • Developers must presumably buy copies also
  • community isn't growing quickly like Ninja's is
  • no free data
They do support c#. I wonder how hard it is to convert existing ninja indicators to neoticker?

On a side note, Ninja sure does illustrate the power of an open platform that is accessible to developers. In spite of all Ninja's problems, it is growing quickly because it is attracting developers and vendors. Reminds me of Microsoft vs. Apple in the early days. Apple had an earlier, better, more stable product, but MS had the developers and PC makers on its side. We know how that turned out.

Thanks for reporting on your investigations. I'll be watching this thread with interest.

I've looked into neoticker as a replacement for ninja and honestly it just seemed like you would run into alot of problems because of the lack of community.
To me it also felt like a hodge podge of stuff at this point, what is the point in supporting delphi?
The neobreadth stuff looked very interesting but then you search on the forums and someone has a problem and no one is really there to answer...
I really think they need to rewrite the whole thing.
Same thing with openquant...Would probly kick ninjas ass if it had the same community but it doesn't support anything for discretionary trading.
We can complain about ninja but there is really no alternative from what I've found.
