hi, this is my first post. I'd like to start by saying thanks to Big Mike and all the contributors to this forum/site. The information we have access in here is simply amazing and priceless.

Since I'm still a newbie, I don't feel I have a lot to say that can help other traders, except for this : the best Heiken Ashi indicator I've seen so far. "Heiken Ashi Smoothed" is originally from Meta Trader but was 'coded' for Ninja Trader. I love the parameters, it gives you lots of control over this indicator. However, this indicator only works on "calculate on bar close = true". When you try to run it live, the results are very different from what you see on historical charts. Since I'm not a programmer at all, can someone look at code and see if this indicator can 'update' live ( calculate on bar close = false ) ?

Thanks !

It should be fine on live data. When you set "calculate on bar close = false", you're telling NT to calculate (i.e. run OnBarUpdate) on every tick. I believe "calculate on bar close = true" runs OnBarUpdate only at the close of a bar (which is what comprises historical data). You can run "calculate on bar close = true" with live data, but it will only run OnBarUpdate at the close of a bar. So for whatever reason, the author of this indicator only wants to run OnBarUpdate at the close of a bar. When running this indicator, keep "calculate on bar close = true" and maybe the historical and live data will run in a similar fashion.

Just a thought ... if you couldn't run an indicator on live data, it probably wouldn't be much of an indicator, would it ?

I do not remember where I had posted the various versions for the Heikin-Ashi bars. This thread has the correct title, so it is now being hijacked.

Heikin-Ashi bars have been first published by Dan Valcu in the February 2004 issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities. A modified version has been presented by Sylvain Vervoort in the November 2007 issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities.

The anaHeikinAshi indicator comes with the following options

-> both Dan Valcu and Sylvain Vervoort formulas are availabe
-> additional smoothing is possible with 30 different moving averages
-> the trend is exposed as BoolSeries
-> original chart bars can be removed or maintained
-> Heikin-Ashi bars can be displayed on the price panel or a second panel
-> Open, High, Low & Close can be used as input series for other indicators or accessed by an automated strategy

The updated indicator can be found here:

Hi there, I just wanted to ask Fat Tails if the barrs in the chart posted here with the Heiken Ashi Indicator encompass the whole PA (Open, High, Low, Close) that happen within the 10 min ?
I've tried to match with the chart for that day and it doesnt seem to match, I'm a newbie so this could be just a rookie mistake from me !
I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks

@tsscherer: The Heikin-Ashi indicator allows you to display

(1) original Heikin-Ashi bars (formula Dan Valcu)
(2) modified Heikin-Ashi bars (formula Sylvain Vervoort)
(3) smoothed Heikin-Ashi bars (formula Dan Valcu)
(4) smoothed Heikin-Ashi bars (formula Sylvain Vervoort)

Heikin-Ashi bars which are not smoothed - that is cases (1) and (2) - cover the entire price action of the period which they represent. Smoothed Heikin-Ashi bars typically have their upper and lower shadows cut, which means that price action can be outside the range of the bar. Therefore smoothed Heikin-Ashi bars should be considered as indicator and not as bar type.

The answer to your question is "NO", because the above chart shows smoothed Heikin-Ashi bars.

Right-click the chart, select DataSeries. Under "Chart style" select "OHLC2, then set the colors for up and down bars to "Gray".

When you apply the anaHeikinAshi indicator, make sure that you set the option "Remove chart bars" to "False".

A sample chart is attached below.

Thanks man, it looks much better now!

Just two more questions:
1) How do you set the blue session line which indicates both Frankfurt and London open & close? (Mine is just showing Frankfurt open)

2) Is there an indicator which would give me the ATR of the last 10 days, simply with 1 number? (See the MT4 pics I attached previously)
I'm also looking for an additiona indicator which would tell the current range in % for the given day (you can also see this in the MT4 pics)

Many, many thanks!

Yuri57

ps.: what are your settings for HAS? (Mine is VanDalcu, 7WMA)
