My Mom was a Physiological Psychologist and was also on the cutting edge of Border Line Personality Disorder.
I have know many Naricissists and BPD's in my life.
I remember my Mom saying "The cream doesn't always rise to the top. Many people who have personality disorders rise to positions of power." She went on to explain, this happens in all levels of our society: governement down to local school administration etc.
I remember watching this program on a man, being represented by an attorney in a murder case. You saw the man (husband) accused, sincerely show concern for his wife who had been murdered. His attorney believed completely that he was not guilty and got him off. Later on, when he moved out of his place, the next renter removed the old carpet and found pictures of the husband torturing his wife with his current girl friend and they had taken trophy pictures of their murder of her. (While married, he rented an apartment for his girl friend. His wife was just about to leave him)
He could not be brought to justice because he was already found not guilty.
The law got him on some small tax evasion and eventually got him in jail and threw away the key.
Later they interviewed the attorney and he said, he was completely fooled. He seemed to be so sincere etc. The thing with Narcissists, they are totally believeable and personality disorders overlap, so someone can be a Narcissist and also have BPD traits etc.
The thing about the husband, he got his girl friend to help him murder and torture his wife and within minutes of murdering her, he went to his wife's family and sat with them, while they hoped and waited to hear from her or the police for any word on where she might be. To the family, he seemed totally concerned and sincere.
BPD's re-write history. I was at lunch with a client. Prior to her arrival, I was waiting and heard my waiter talk about how he went to an audition and was hoping to get the part in a commerical. When my client arrived, she asked if I had been waiting long and I said, "No" and that I was entertained by listening to our waiter and told her his story.
When our waiter came to take our order, before he left, she looked at our waiter and said "I am getting something on you. I think you are an actor and you recently went to an audition and you are going to get the part". The waiter was completely impressed and happy and she turned to me and said: "See, I told you I was psychic". My client totally re-wrote history with in minutes. She forgot that I had just told her the waiter had gone on an audition etc. SHE TOTALLY BELIEVED WHAT SHE WAS SAYING! I thought, her behavior was off and she later on, proved to me, she was a BPD etc.
BPD's, Narcissists totally believe in what they are saying which makes them seem totally sincere and believable and that makes others prey to them on so many levels.
BPD's think in black and white, they believe in what they are saying, which gives them conviction and makes them seem sincere etc.
Personality disorders overlap, so they can have traits of other disorders etc.
Also, Narcissist's are empty inside. They can not get enough power, money or attention. That is why they rise to positions of power etc, they never get their fill.
