Google sure understands the implications of this self driving car and is hitting it big while it's still in it's infancy to corner the market because 15-20 years from now I bet most cars on the road will be driving themselves
benefits -
- insurance reduction
- less accidents (less drinking, texting, eating, sleeping while driving) (car can see it's blind spots)
- trucks don't need drivers to make delivery more efficient
- carpooling and accessibility of public transportation
- self driving cars will be able to communicate with each other to prevent accidents/traffic on upcoming roads
- they'll be able to drive faster
- can program the car to drive home so other people can use the car. Can program the car to get gas etc.
The list goes on and on. There are probably advantages that we don't know about because it's such a new idea.
Unfortunately the public perception doesn't trust cars driving themselves because it hasn't been integrated into
out minds yet that it's safer but it will be. A car that can identify a hand signal from a biker with the speed of a computer will be much safer as the technology progresses.
This is a potential game changer for society in general. It'll be funny when we tell our grandchildren "Back in my day we used to drive our cars"
