glad to find this thread; we have been thinking about getting a dog. have never had a dog before.

What do you want your dog to be like?

Do you want your dog to be energetic or just sit around mostly?
Do you want a dog that is really good with kids?

You should take some time and look at the characteristics of the different breeds of dogs.

I just quickly found this link. I don't know if the info is valid, but it's a start. (hope it works out)

Most dogs need exercise and lots of it, going to the bathroom is just going to be part of your problem. I have a german shepherd and just love her but I live on 100 acres.

i wonder if i could somehow train the dog to wee out there in a...

Going to the bathroom is NOT all of it. There are some dog breeds
that slobber and drool. There is no way to train them out of it.

These 2 links provide listings of the dog breeds. I haven't double
checked anything as far as the accuracy of the lists go, but that is
another matter for you to consider.

Also as far as vet bills are concerned, some breeds are more prone
to such and such a serious health problem. etc.etc.

ty Cloudy! i think i'm going to wait a little while as trading takes all my focus when i'm in the market - don't want the poor dog to have to compete just when it moves into its new home. maybe in the summer.
