I have applied a Trend Strengh filter to SuperTrend Strategy

I used this parameters:

ATR parameters for the Supertrend:
atrlength: 8
multiplier: 5.5

ATR parameters for the filter Trend Strength:
atrlength2: 120
multiplier2: 5

Minimum strength:
strength: -0.9
You can see the range of this parameter in the indicator.

Using instrument XAGUSD from 2010 to 2011-06-21
I am getting a 50% profit in 2010 and 29% profit in 2011

Please let us know the result of your test.

If you have a strong and trending market, the Supertrend keeps you in the position, if you select a wide stop by increasing the multiplier.

Let us have a look at daily bars. With hindsight knowledge, you will find that the best value for the multiplier for the last 2 years would have been 5.5, as you would not have been stopped out a single time since August 2009.

But does this mean that 5.5 is the best parameter for the coming two years? Certainly not.

Otherwise the idea of combining the SuperTrend with a chop filter points in the right direction. The SuperTrend works very well during trending periods, but produces many whipsaw trades during choppy times.

Well, if you are expecting volatile times, then what is a good setting? 20?

What does the trend strength filter measure?

How do you trade using it?

Bluemele, as the word tells strength should meassure the strength of the trend, if you use this parameters in the filter and indicator:
atrlength2: 480
multiplier2: 5

you will see that when trend strength is less than 0 the trend is not very strong and we are in range, especially from beginning of june. However althought visually looks better, the best parameters to get more gain is use 120 as atrlength2.

Probably its not the best way to meassure the strength of the signal, if you think you have any other indicator that can filter range periods better please let us know.

I am testing a supertrend strategy with trend strengthfilter for Ninjatrader7.
Trend strength filter I am using is a range of SMA from 5 to 100 periods ...the more SMAs below/above current price...the stronger the up/down trend.

When the price crosses supertrend line...it checks for trendstrength above or below50/-50 line and if it agrees then it takes the trade. With supertrend alone, profitable trades are about 50-55%....with added filter it is about 60%.

Does anybody know a working settings for trend strength filter to be used with supertrend?

Any other better filter to be used with supertrend?
