Didn't know where this might be most appropriate, but it's a psych issue....

With coding, whether it's indicators, paintbars, showmes, strategies....I'm sure everyone has run into this issue.

Have you ever made a discovery or learned how to do something that once you realized how to do it.....

You were so incredibly mad at yourself, because what used to take you 10 or 100 times longer to do, now takes a fraction of the time?

With TS, the platform has some pretty significant limitations and so "work arounds" and tricks become crucial to being time efficient.

Every time I do a little (or a lot) of research on how to get around an issue, I discover the solution and it's nice to figure it out....but in some cases, I shake my head, because what I used to take HOURS and HOURS of manual calculations, chart reading, etc....now takes a few key strokes....

I dunno, maybe I'm way off base here.

I'm confused.

So is the problem that you are annoyed that it took you too long to figure it out and the solution was actually really simple?

Or is it that now the challenge to do it is gone?

No. I'm happy that I figured out a much quicker/efficient way to do things, but mad and frustrated that I spent all that time doing it the hard/long way.

Imagine the guy that manually searches through hundreds of stocks on Yahoo finance doing painstaking research only to discover that he can do what used to take him hours or days of searching with a new stock screener.

Or imagine not being able to backtest a strategy and thinking it was beyond the capability of a platform, only to discover someone else's crafty workaround solution.

You're happy that you can now do it, but at the same time, you wish you'd had the information/knowledge before you spent half your waking hours working in the past to accomplish what now takes 15 minutes.

Oh definitely!

I know exactly what you mean.

I can't think of an example. But with my limited knowledge on writing scripts, I'm always finding out that I'm doing things in the most inefficient, time consuming manner possible.

This is somewhat recognizable (just experienced it in the topic ), but I wouldn't classify my mental state as "mad", but more annoyed that I didn't thought of an obvious angle to approach the problem and perhaps also annoyed (and feel somewhat "stupid"?) that I asked a question about something I should have know.

Interesting.

Well,

When I discovered how to automatically optimize strategy inputs (instead of manually doing it trial and error) I about lost it.

I'd wasted ALL THAT TIME by manually inputting a value, noting the performance, then changing it...

Now multiply it by thousands as the number of input variables increased. What used to take me hours, now takes a few minutes, just because I didn't know how to properly use the capabilities of my platform.

Same with backtesting. Certain strategies, I used to have to manually go back through the chart, click on bars, write the value down or manually calculate, then move to the next point of interest, all because I wasn't smart or clever enough to find a workaround that would allow me to backtest. Once I discovered how, I realized that I'd wasted/dumped all that time manually doing it, when it took me a few minutes or an hour or two to learn the shortcut.
