Unfortunately, there are only degrees of privacy protection on the net. Some (like Microsoft, Apple and Google) are more pernicious and insidious than others. But there are no absolutes here.

At least with Firefox, you can control to a great degree exactly who is spying on you. Their privacy controls are better than Chrome (MSIE doesn't even count - if you use IE you deserve every virus and malware you get -it is that bad

However cookie are nothing compared to Flash cookies (or super cookies). they are way more insidious and nasty because few talk about. And they store a lot more information.

It is probably not possible to protect yourself completely but I personally do the following -
Use Google Chrome
Clear cache and cookies on every session
Block ALL 3rd party cookies
Restrict and delete all flash cookies periodically.
Do not sign up for anything on the net.
Aggressively be very selective on which sites to visit.
Do not use ANY Microsoft services (other than OS and Office).
Do not use my trading machine or my backup for any surfing.

An eye opener on cookies and "super cookies".....

New Breed of Super Cookie Defies Removal - Almost...

And of course, no social networking sites (especially that gawdawful Facebook)!

Thanks a lot for that useful link. For anybody, who wants to know more about the super cookies that are already stored on your PC, just click the following link

Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager - Website Storage Settings panel

The Adobe flash player stores cookies that are not controlled via the Browser, so they are persistent unless you change the Flash Player controls by visiting the Adobe Website Storage Settings panel.

I will also check the better privacy tool for Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6623/

If you think that Atlas Institute has nothing to do with Microsoft, please visit their homepage here:

Atlas Institute - digital marketing trends, measurement and best practices

This is directly from the home page:

Microsoft's Atlas Institute is a think tank of senior marketing analysts, who uncover hidden trends, test theories, and evaluate the effectiveness of digital marketing practices. It’s leading-edge intelligence that you won’t find anywhere else. Created through our ongoing obsession with advancing our industry.

Thanks!
This is interesting, and I wonder if they were acquired by Microsoft like Google and the Double Click deal.
I was in touch with Atlas a few years back and I don't recall any mention of Microsoft on their site.

Over a decade ago, I also experimented with overture, way before Google came up with AdWords.
This was my first glance as to how search engines collect data about us and gear specific adverting towards us.
On one hand it's a bit scary that if you are looking for example "vacation in Greece" and you come to a site with a cookie, you will see the same site over and over again on every site that runs Adsense. How objective are your choices? They are not. The net in the futures will be "personalized" with ad products that you are most likely to purchase.

Essentially today every site with lots of visitors collects data, but it's not always a negative thing.
Many times it's positive to provide a better (smoother) surfing experience, create better navigation and getting the prospect faster to the main point. Consider useit.com: Jakob Nielsen on Usability and Web Design which has led the way in internet and site design.
This whole journey of learning the web has led me to studies of interface designs, digital architecture, human interaction with the web and above all SIMPLICITY which has became a way of life in anything that I try to apply myself to, including trading.

Trading futures and options involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. You may lose more than your initial investment. All posts are opinions and do not claim to be facts. Please conduct your own due diligence. Use only Risk capital when trading Futures.

Absolutely agree. It is just a double-sided sword. There are benefits, such as

- being able to use sophisticated software for free, as it is financed via advertising
- getting offers tailored to my preferences

On the other side, this information leaves a full trace of all your activities and preferences, which can be abused.

It is advertising that leads us directly into an Orwellian State.

Is subscribing to an anonymous proxy service a solution to protect your privacy ?

I am not that much scared, there is nothing to protect. For me it is more a game. The companies try to exploit my habits to spam me with pop-ups and ads, and I am just defending my privacy for getting not too many of them.

The only potential threat that I can see arises from totalitarian organizations, which could access this information exclusively and abuse it. This would be typically government agencies. The GESTAPO or the MFS (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit der DDR) would have loved cookies.

Yes, but with cookies they could have gathered even more information, fully automated. That would have been some productivity gains.
