Great info Fat Tails.

I've been trying to figure out the exact recommendations you made. You share a lot of critical info for traders.

However, I would never build a computer. You can buy something like

Hewlett Packard Z400 / Z600
Dell Workstation T3500 / T5500
Lenovo Thinkstation S20

and fit them with up to 6 monitors. Depending on your needs the workstations can be equipped with

- NVS 290 -> Dual DVI, active cooling (no DisplayPort)
- NVS 295 -> Dual DisplayPort, passive cooling, 23 Watts
- NVS 450 -> Quad DVI, 35 Watts
- ATI FirePro V3700 -> Dual DVI (no DisplayPort), 32 Watts
- ATI FirePro V5700 -> Dual DisplayPort, 56 Watts

All these cards can be used for the above workstations, Dell does not use NVS 290 and has a ATI FirePro V3750 instead of the V3700.

For trading purposes the cheapest, which is NVS 295, is the best. It also has the lowest energy consumption and no noise emission.

For my old machine, I ordered them from Dell directly.

But for example the Z400 is often sold without graphics adapter. You can then buy the card from HP - certified to work - and put it into the slots. For Lenovo I do not remember.

I have a 5870 and have had quite a few problems with it. I would go for an nvidia card, they are more reliable and have better 2d performance (better for charting, video etc).

I have two 3870 (ATI chip), and have problems with my two monitors rotated to portait that are on the same card. I'd go with nVidi.

I think this card rocks if you have display port displays. If not, you can still use it but you have to buy adapter cables, which are ok for DVI, but rather expensive for dual-DVI.

This card makes sense, if you buy new monitors with display ports. If you have a bunch of DVI monitors, the adapters will make this solution more expensive than two NVidia NVS 295 cards.

Positive:

Low power consumption

Negative:

Neither HP, Dell nor Lenovo offer this card for their workstations. Why?

Note that it is a relatively new product, which was only launched in 2010. As it does not have DVI connectors, the three companies may have feared complaints of their customers.

This card makes sense, if you buy new monitors with display ports. If you have a bunch of DVI monitors, the adapters will make this solution more expensive than two NVidia NVS 295 cards.

The retail package should include 4 mini display port to DVI cables. I expect that these adapters are single link, so each can be used up to max. 1920x1200 pixels. So the price is final.

I hopefully get my card next week. A short review will be posted here...

My experience is similar. I actually sold my ATI cards because of the problems with charting in NT ... lines made by crosshairs and sometimes other draw objects left artifacts until the chart was redrawn ..no help from ATI support!. no such problem with Nvidia.

It is nice to have big monitors: I have 2 x 28" and had an additional 2 x24" at the same time. I understand that the cards designed for the financial markets use have better drivers included for 2D charting .. I have no personal experience however.
