Tip

EDIT: April 28 2012

See post:

RDP is now supported with IRT 10.6.

Just a heads up to save someone else some agony.

I recently decided to move all of my trading applications to a dedicated machine in Chicago, and use Remote Desktop to interface.

Everything went smoothly, as expected. DTN IQFeed, MultiCharts, Sierra Chart - all worked beautifully. Then I tried to load Investor/RT, which I have been using for cumulative delta analysis. Queue sad music.

Investor/RT is not compatible with Remote Desktop. More accurately, IRT refuses to activate itself (license protection) via a Remote Desktop client. The error message is very specific: "Investor/RT license activation is not supported on multi-user servers or terminal services mode. Contact [email protected] for assistance."

So I did contact Bill @ Linnsoft, and he confirmed it is not possible. He hinted it may one day be possible, but would require some licensing changes on their side, so for now - it is not possible.

I won't be able to use Investor/RT any longer, for this reason. So I'll duplicate my cumulative delta charts with Sierra Chart for now, and move on. Not ideal, not what I wanted, but the only other choice is to abandon the plans to use my dedicated trading server, which is not something I am willing to do.

I write this post just in case it can benefit someone else before they make plans that they can't follow through on.

Mike

Just out of curiosity have you tried VNC (TightVNC or UltraVNC) to see if that worked? IIRC it doesn't use the usual Terminal Services method and Investor/RT might not recognize its being used.

I agree its kind of lame they stop you from using this.

Yes, they are doing something else to test for this. I even used XenCenter client and opened a local console (no RDP), it still had the same error. It seems they do a test to see if it is a virtual machine perhaps (device string comparison).

I tried a few things. In the end maybe I could have tricked it, but I didn't want to purposely go against the licensing restriction, and was concerned that it would cause me problems in the future as the program is updated regularly, and for each upgrade the license deactivated and reactivated.

Hi Big Mike:

I read your note on being unable to use IRT remotely. I know it is recent but have you had a chance to start translating your IRT-scripted trading system to an alternate program? I have an IRT formula using tick data and volume breakdown and am seeking an alternate package to graph it in as I had problems with lagging and crashing when using IRT with DTN datatfeed.

Many thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.

I never got far enough with IRT to learn the RTL language, I was primarily using it for the VB tool set for CDV analysis. I'm currently using Sierra instead.

I never had any problems with IRT lagging and crashing, and I was also using IQFeed. You should contact support, I'm sure Chad can get you fixed up.

Very strange, I use the same set-up on my laptop as a backup, and I've never had any problems. In fact, I think IRT is the only program I've used that hasn't crashed even once...

Hi Chad:

You generously offered me a great deal of help in the past but we weren't able to resolve the crashing/delayed graph appearance issue intraday when using short (<1 min) bars. I eventually gave up and stopped using the IRT/DTN combination but never really got the formula programmed in an alternate graphing package. Recently, I started reviewing the problem again hoping a new solution might be available.

Thanks.

Please send me an email and refresh my memory on the details, and I'll see what I can do.
