I'd like to have a setup where I have a VPS running tradestation with some algos,
as well as local pc where I do backtesting.
I dont want to work on the algo station as backtesting uses up resources, so I prefer to work on my local PC.
Tradestation only allows 1 login at a time, so it will boot me out of the VPS if I open the local one.
I was just wondering how others have set this up?
Speaking to the Tradestation team they mention that to have 2 logins you have to pay extra ($50 per month).
Is there any way around this cost?
* The backtesting can obviously be done with old data or in a sim environment, doesnt need to be live.
Thanks
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
I went through the same process and couldn't justify the additional costs from Tradestation. I think it's around $50 for the additional login PLUS data fees. So all those data subscriptions that are free currently, you would have to pay as well. The fees are not posted on the website as it just says free, but not for a second login.
I have multicharts for backtesting and run live strategies on Tradestation through a dedicated virtual server. I have no issues backtesting with multicharts while trading. I have 8 cores and I love the multicharts feature where you can adjust core usage. I set it to 5 and have zero lag on Tradestation. I only test with 8 cores during off hours which is only 1 hr now. Slows backtesting down quite a bit but no additional fees. If the combo ever causes a missed trade, improper execution, or crashes, that would justify a second license to me. Or if faster backtesting would make me more money, it would be justification.
Talk to your account rep. Many times, depending on your account size and volume, they might waive that 2nd platform fee.
Also, if you are using the 2nd platform purely for development work and no live real/sim trading, then you do not need live data. You can get free delayed data.
And unless you are testing something very intensive, you could probably test and live trade on same machine - I did that for many years.
Is there no other way of having 1 tradestation on a VPS and another thats linked to (eg) a SIM account that I can run my backtests on?
I dont want to be working on my tradestation while its running (eg) 20 systems.
From the TS Rep:
They may be able to come up with some other solution, but the only way to log into 2 machines (VPS or otherwise) is to have 2 logins, and a second login is $50/month plus the cost of real time data.

I know for some clients, they don't allow a 2nd login at all. So at least they allow you to do that! Their answer, in part, I believe has to do with your account size and trading volume.
So my final setup seems to:
As Ive used the 1st computer quite extensively it has downloaded all the data to the cache already.
So I created a backup of it and restored it on my 2nd computer.
Included in the backup is the data/cache option
Using the workoffline mode on 1 and live on the other, I can now run tradestation on both, however one obviously doesnt receive any new data.
Im now able to do backtesting on old data and then move any new system over to the online one.
I dont need any new data to be streaming for historic backtesting.
